Refraction brings iOS to its' knees - any suggestions on how to fake it?

Pretty much the title says it all - after some debugging with an iPad Air, I have traced a 25+ FPS framerate drop to just plugging a value into the refraction slot - anything that can be done to fake this in Shader Forge?

Kindest Regards,
Garry

Alright, good! Closing this, as refraction is indeed a heavy effect, especially when used on more than one object :)
À l'étude
Refraction is inherently expensive as it is. How many meshes are using it? I recommend not using it on more than one mesh at a time
Indeed, I am using it on several meshes - and yes, it is really tanking the framerate (works great on MacBook Air).  Any suggestions for how to fake it?
I was able to play with the gloss setting, and it looks significantly better now, without plugging into the refraction slot.
