This is now fixed in Beta 0.19!
It actually does calculate that, and has worked for the meshed I've tried, though they've been bigger, not smaller. (And you can use custom meshes right no)

There are a total of three ways of directly disconnecting connections. One is the alt+RMB tap that I mentioned above, the other being hovering the cursor over the connector and pressing backspace

You can already do that, and the component mask supports 4 component vectors too :)
